Purse seiners find bluefin on Georges
GLOUCESTER, MA - Bluefin tuna buzz was heard in the region as several purse seiners scored with sets on Georges Bank in mid-August.
The first success by White Dove Too was on an Aug. 11-13 trip, described by the purse seiner’s cook Marco Genovese of Cape May as “one of those rare textbook trips when everything came together perfectly.”
The White Dove Too, guided by spotter plane pilot Dave Thompson, who flies out of New Bedford, made one set on Georges on Friday at 12:30 pm. It netted 100 bluefin roughly 15 tons of 200 to 500 pound fish.
“There’s lots of fish around this year,” said Genovese, who added, “Last year, we caught only 6 tons, which translated to four months of fishing for no pay.”
The Hell Hole fishery in Canadian waters had also reportedly “opened up,” which bodes well for the US fleet, particularly the BB buoy fishery off Chatham. Fishermen believe the area is populated by fish that have been in the Hell Hole and are on their way back to US waters. /cfn/
