Commerce names appointments to fishery councils
WASHINGTON, DC - There will be one newcomer among the individuals who will officially start new terms as members of the New England Fishery Management Council on Aug. 11, though the next full council meeting is scheduled for Sept. 26-28.
David Preble, a charterboat operator and member of the Rhode Island Marine Fisheries Council, will fill the obligatory seat for Rhode Island. He replaces current council Chairman Frank Blount, who was not eligible for reappointment because he is completing his third consecutive term.
The Commerce Department announced this year’s appointments on July 3.
In addition to Preble, three individuals were reappointed to obligatory seats for states represented on the New England council:
• Sally McGee of Connecticut;
• Jim Odlin of Maine; and
• Rodney Avila of Massachusetts.
Dana Rice of Maine was reappointed to the at-large seat he has held since 2003.
Appointments to the Mid-Atlantic council included two obligatory seats that went to Edward Goldman of New Jersey and Jeffrey Deem of Virginia. Goldman replaces Tony Bogan and Deem replaces Robert Pride.
Reappointed to at-large seats were Dennis Spitsbergen of North Carolina and Laurie Nolan of New York.
For the South Atlantic council, the appointments were: Charles Harris of Georgia, obligatory; Tony Iarocci of Florida, obligatory; John Wallace of Georgia, at-large; and Ben Currin of North Carolina, at-large.
