Experts answer bluefin questions
The recent decline of the giant bluefin tuna fishery in New England has hurt fishermen economically and touched off furious debates over the reasons why the big fish just don’t seem to be available anymore.
To get a broader perspective about what might be happening, Commercial Fisheries News Associate Editor Lorelei Stevens asked a number of experts three scientists, a manager, and a fisherman to answer several questions about bluefin behavior and stock condition and what the US should be doing about the situation, both here at home and at the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT). <
Brad Chase
Brad Chase is a marine fisheries biologist for the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries. Currently, he is responsible for tracking American eel, rainbow smelt, and bluefin tuna and coordinating anadromous fish habitat restoration.

Steve Weiner
Steve Weiner has been harpooning bluefin tuna off the New England coast since the late 1960s. He is a member of the East Coast Tuna Association and was its president for a number of years. He was also a member of the US ICCAT Advisory Committee for more than 10 years. ...continued here
Molly Lutcavage
Molly Lutcavage is director of the Large Pelagics Research Center at the University of New Hampshire where she continues to oversee research on bluefin tuna, including the “Tag-a-Tiny” program.

Bill Hogarth
Bill Hogarth is director of the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) and is responsible for overseeing the management and conservation of US federal waters fisheries, marine mammals, and sea turtles. He also is the United States Government Commissioner to ICCAT and current ICCAT chairman.

Barbara Block
Barbara Block, co-founder of the Tuna Research and Conservation Center (TRCC) at the Monterey Bay Aquarium and a professor of marine sciences at Stanford University, has been tagging giant bluefin tuna primarily off of the Carolinas since 1996. ...continued here
