The flames and heat of onboard fires can be intense, as is apparent when you look closely at the damage being suffered by the Amber Nicole during a Jan. 16 dockside fire. If a fire breaks out while at-sea, steps should be taken immediately to remove life-saving equipment from the area of the blaze because it can be rendered useless by exposure to heat and flames. Immersion suits have melted. Hydrostatic release mechanisms also have melted and not functioned, preventing EPIRBs and life rafts from floating free. Also, the life raft canister gasket and raft itself can melt, fusing the canister together so that the raft cannot deploy. (Steven Kennedy photo)
