CFN: Who we are and why we’re here
The start of the New Year is traditionally a time for reflection, self-examination, and resolutions. We’ve been doing some of that here at Commercial Fisheries News, thinking about who we are, what we want to be, and about you, our readers, contributors, and advertisers, who we consider to be part of our team.
Since 1974, CFN has delivered the news that people working in the Northeast’s commercial fishing industry need to stay legal, safe, and on top of regulatory issues all to help you make informed business decisions.
We strive to make our news delivery straightforward, plain spoken, and objective, giving both sides of the story. Sometimes we take a little heat for it, but, even with the most controversial issues in the industry, we trust our readers’ ability to draw their own conclusions.
We also strive to make our news coverage regional in scope. That’s because whether you’re talking about lobsters, groundfish, scallops, or shellfish, management decisions made in one part of the Northeast often directly impact industry members in another.
This approach also gives us the opportunity to showcase organizational, marketing, management, equipment, and safety innovations and experiences that we hope will spark other people to pursue good ideas. What lobsterman, after reading Jason Lemos’s harrowing story of being pulled overboard by his traps (CFN January 2007), didn’t at least think about going out and buying a couple of extra knives?
That’s also the thinking behind CFN’s commitment to broad coverage of new boats and fleet additions and people profiles; we aim to both inform and inspire.
These days, most news organizations are making substantial editorial cutbacks, opting instead to publish single-source press releases and rely on third-party sources like the Internet. CFN has chosen another route. We are continuing to invest in and expand our newsgathering team to fulfill our mission.
We recently renewed our commitment to firsthand reporting of state news from Maine and Rhode Island, as well as Massachusetts, and to broaden our market report coverage. We also are working to expand our boat and services coverage to better serve our Mid-Atlantic readers and give New Englanders some feel for what’s going on to the south.
But as much news as we present in our pages, we rely on our readers to share their insights and expertise to both fill in missing information and opinions and to spur more in-depth discussion. We view Commercial Fisheries News as a regionwide forum for the exchange of ideas, and we encourage you to contribute by sending in letters to the editor, guest columns, or just calling or e-mailing to let us know what’s on your mind.
All of what we do is possible because of the loyal support of our advertisers. Over the years, we’ve found that companies large and small advertise in Commercial Fisheries News for a number of different reasons. First and foremost, these businesses know by our solid paid subscription base that our readers are serious fishermen who read CFN “from cover to cover” every month and are the best market for their products. Some stay with CFN because they believe what we do is important to the Northeast commercial fishing industry and they want to support it. We greatly appreciate these votes of confidence.
We at CFN are proud to be part of this industry and, as we head into 2007, we resolve to maintain our high standards. With your help, we will continue making CFN the best it can be. /cfn/
