Coast Guard wants feedback on LORAN-C shutdown proposal

WASHINGTON, DC – In a Jan. 8 Federal Register announcement, the Coast Guard announced that it was requesting feedback from the public on the possible decommissioning of the long range navigation system known as LORAN-C.

Fixed-gear fishermen and others who rely on LORAN-C as a backup to GPS have until Feb. 7 to tell the Coast Guard what they think.

“No decision has been made at the federal level,” said Coast Guard spokesman Angela McArdle in mid-January. “Fewer and fewer people are using LORAN and we want to provide the public the opportunity to comment so that we have all perspectives represented in the eventual decision on what will happen to LORAN.”

Last summer, the Coast Guard announced that it was proposing zero funding to support LORAN-C in its fiscal year 2007 budget, virtually guaranteeing the system’s demise. But now it looks as though the agency has decided to give the issue another look.

Specifically, the Coast Guard wants to know the following:

The extent to which LORAN-C in its current form is used for positioning, navigation, and timing; and

The extent to which “enhanced LORAN,” an updated and enhanced version of LORAN-C commonly known as “eLORAN,” would be applied to these same practices as either a complementary service or as a backup to GPS.
