New England council leadership change: Pappalardo, Cunningham
PEABODY, MA In a major changing of the guard, the New England Fishery Management Council elected John Pappalardo of Chatham, MA to be its new chairman. Also during its Sept. 26-28 meeting, the council voted in Rip Cunningham, another Massachusetts appointee, to serve as vice chair.
Pappalardo is a policy analyst for the Cape Cod Commercial Hook Fishermen’s Association and the manager of the Georges Bank Cod Hook Sector. He was first appointed to the council in 2002 and is currently serving his second consecutive term. He replaces former Chairman Frank Blount of Rhode Island, who presided over his last meeting in June after completing three consecutive terms on the council, which made him ineligible for reappointment this year.
Cunningham is the former publisher and editor in chief of Salt Water Sportsman. He is currently serving his first term on the council and is active on numerous fishing-related boards and committees, including the Massachusetts Marine Fisheries Commission. He is an avid outdoorsman and acclaimed recreational fisherman and writer.
As chair and vice chair, Pappalardo and Cunningham will serve on the council’s executive committee. The council elected three other members to join them: Jim Odlin of Maine; Sally McGee of Connecticut; and David Pierce of Massachusetts.
Late in June, the secretary of commerce reappointed four sitting members of the council to serve another term McGee, Odlin, Dana Rice of Maine, and Rodney Avila of Massachusetts who were all sworn in for their next round of service during the September meeting.
Also sworn in and joining the council for the first time was David Preble of Rhode Island, who was appointed to fill Blount’s obligatory seat for the state.
Preble is the owner/operator of the charter boat Early Bird in Snug Harbor. He is a member of the Rhode Island Marine Fisheries Council and has authored numerous fishing related articles and books, including “Fishing for Yellowfin Tuna” and “The Fishes of the Sea: Commercial and Sport Fishing in New England.”
