Maine secures DOL retraining grant for fishermen, spouses

PORTLAND, ME – The Maine Workforce Investment Board working through the Maine Department of Labor received a new fishing industry retraining grant from the US Department of Labor under the National Emergency Grant process in July.

Maine received a one-year grant of $423,231 to provide retraining for new applicants – fishermen and their spouses – from throughout the state. The grant ends in June 2007 and is expected to be the last of fishing industry retraining monies available to the state.

Chris Harvey, director of operations at the Training Resource Center (TRC) in Portland, explained that the TRC office will be handling the retraining needs of fishermen and their spouses from Cumberland and York counties in Maine and from New Hampshire. Various Maine Career Center offices will be handling retraining requests from fishermen living in other parts of the state.

Former fisherman Tom Jordan is back part-time as a retraining liaison to the fishing industry.

“I will be out on the docks in Portland, southern Maine, and New Hampshire monthly to talk about retraining help for commercial fishermen,” he said. “I will be taking calls (at TRC) in Portland and I also can be reached on my cell phone at (207) 671-6255. Fishermen or spouses should give me a call with any questions.”
