Fishermen comment cards coming soon

National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) observers soon will be required to leave a “Fishermen’s Comment Card” with the captain at the end of every observed trip.

The pre-addressed, postage-paid card is meant to give fishermen the chance to let the NMFS observer program know how things went on the trip.

“Fishermen have told us we need to separate the good (observers) from the bad and we absolutely want to do that,” said David Potter, chief of the NMFS Northeast Fisheries Science Center’s Fisheries Sampling Branch.

Observer program administrators will be looking for the cards to be returned, he added.

“If we don’t get them, we’ll call the captain to make sure they were left,” Potter said. “We think fishermen would like the opportunity to identify the star and the guy who was sick in his bunk the whole time and probably needs a new career.”
