Researchers, fishermen tag monkfish; probe north/south mixing rates
WOODS HOLE, MA – It takes a bit of skill to do surgery on a monkfish, especially at sea in the bitter cold.
But several researchers have mastered the art, making delicate incisions in the tail of each fish to surgically implant bullet-shaped data storage tags. They did it 150 times in 2009 aboard commercial fishing vessels and, as the new year opened, were prepping to head out to sea to do it again. ...continued

Monkfish aging study may alter old thinking

Monkfish Amd. 5 to boost TALs, require VMS

NEWBURYPORT, MA – Monkfish fishermen may see their total allowable landings (TAL) increase significantly in fishing years 2011, 2012, and 2013 if proposed specifications in Amendment 5 to the federal monkfish plan are adopted by the New England and Mid-Atlantic Fishery Management Councils, which jointly manage the fishery. ...continued

Scallop industry wins reconsideration of FW 21
NEW BEDFORD, MA – The scallop industry demonstrated its formidable strength in recent weeks as it mounted – and won – a relentless campaign to compel the New England Fishery Management Council to reconsider its decision on 2010 fishery specifications through Framework 21 to the federal scallop plan. ...continued

Larson leaves legacy of industry innovation
Take New Jersey’s Garden State Parkway to Route 72 East. Follow it to the beach and turn north. Over the next four miles, you’ll pass through half a dozen small towns that are packed with vacationers in the summer, mostly deserted in the winter, and similar in that almost all of the businesses cater to seasonal visitors to Long Beach Island. ...continued

Fishermen urged to sign letter, petition to fix Magnuson Act

WASHINGTON, DC – Commercial, recreational, and party/charter boat fishermen and shoreside support businesses nationwide are signing on to an ad hoc group calling itself the Preserve Fishing Coalition. ...continued
