Herring bait to flow in October, November
DURHAM, NH – In a hard-won and delicately crafted compromise intended to ensure a steady flow of fresh bait into the marketplace for lobstermen entering the peak of their fishing season, the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission’s (ASMFC) Atlantic Herring Section voted at a Sept. 24 meeting here to authorize seven more herring “landing” days in October for fish coming out of Area 1A in the inshore Gulf of Maine. ...continued


Tag-a-Tiny Tourney produces giant results
GLOUCESTER, MA – The Tag-a-Tiny Tournament based in Gloucester Aug. 21-24 was a success. With good weather on their side, participating fishermen tagged and released approximately 18 juvenile bluefin tuna. Loligo fishery impacts prompt GSSA to ask for butterfish Amendment 10 delay
PHILADELPHIA, PA – The Mid-Atlantic Fishery Management Council selected alternatives for Amendment 10 to the Atlantic Mackerel, Squid, and Butterfish Fishery Management Plan during its Aug. 11 meeting that involve serious restrictions on the Loligo and Illex squid fisheries, even though the purpose of the amendment is to rebuild the butterfish stock. ...continued

BOSTON, MA – On Aug. 29, checks went out to qualified permit holders as the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries (DMF) completed Phase I of a two-part program to distribute $12.7 million of the $13.4 million in “Framework 42, Massachusetts Groundfish Relief” funds appropriated by Congress. ...continued
