NE council nixes herring 1A quota adjustment
PLYMOUTH, MA – Despite strong appeals from the directed herring industry and scientific and anecdotal information about an upsurge of herring in inshore waters, the New England Fishery Management Council voted against asking the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) to boost the 45,000 metric ton (mt) quota for Area 1A for 2008 and 2009. ...continued

ME lobstermen turnout for FEIS, sink rope meeting
ELLSWORTH, ME – At the Maine Fishermen’s Forum last March, the Maine Lobstermen’s Association (MLA) announced it was going to intervene in a federal lawsuit brought by two conservation groups to force the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) to act on getting out new whale protection rules. ASMFC approves Area 6 lobster v-notch plan
ALEXANDRIA, VA – After deeming the program to be “conservation equivalent” to a 1/16" increase in the minimum gauge, the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission’s (ASMFC) American Lobster Management Board voted on Aug. 13 to approve Connecticut’s comprehensive v-notch plan for all of Area 6, encompassing both the New York and Connecticut sides of Long Island Sound. ...continued

LUBEC, ME – On Water Street in Lubec, just north of the bridge to Campobello Island, sits the R.J. Peacock Canning Company. On the back side of this historic building, past piles of processing equipment, old line, chain, and other waterfront clutter, emerge two small, black polyethylene pipes.
